Introduction to Styling and Art Direction

A stylist’s work is vital in the fashion World as a picture paints a thousand words. The presentation of a collection on the catwalk, the visualisation of a brand concept, or dressing for a particular event, are all functions that would be impossible today without the work of a stylist.

In this course, a stylist’s work is explained, with its different facets.

Objectives

  • Recognising the work of twentieth century photographers, their stylistic legacy and their relationships with art directors.
  • Analysing current publicity campaigns, films, video clips, designers… which are setting future trends in order to build a foundation for the student which will permit him/her to meet the challenges of a working as a stylist or an art director.

What is a stylist, what the job entails and different types of stylist
What is an art director
Analysis of the role of stylist and/or art director.
Brief history of styling in the twentieth century
The photographs that  initiated twentieth century aesthetics
Fashion magazines: Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Vanity Fair, ID, Surface...
Fashion editorials
Practical Analysis of fashion publicity and campaigns today
Behind a great fashion campaign
Study and practical analysis of real campaigns
